Merry Christmas!

Spreading of Christmas Cheer

Thank you for bringing the joyous spirit of Christmas to our patients, staff, and visitors. In view of the multi-racial & religious environment that we operate in, please take note of the following during the carolling session:

J Please restrict the number of carollers in the group to no more than 10 people. Only carollers aged 16 and above are allowed in the wards.

J Do not report for carolling if your body temperature is above 37.5°C, or if you do not feel well. Also, please inform your group leader and organisation.

J Should the hospital be on orange alert in the event of a fresh outbreak of H1N1 or any other infectious diseases, we may cancel all performances at short notice. The team leader will be notified and he/she should inform the rest of the members. We seek your kind understanding on this matter.

J Perform within the work areas assigned to you. Do not cross between wards or departments areas. Also, do not perform any carolling near High Dependency wards, Intensive Care Units (ICUs) or isolation rooms.

J Please avoid shaking hands with the patients in order to prevent possible cross infection. If you have touched patients, please practice good hygiene and wash your hands thoroughly when entering and/or leaving the hospital grounds.

J Please do not post photos of our patients & staff on Facebook or on any other forms of social media so as to respect patients’ confidentiality and personal privacy. However, you are welcome to snap photos of your own group performing the carolling activities. Please do email us a couple of photos for our own archives if possible.

J Please avoid performing nativity scenes or other religious dramas/plays during the carolling session.

J Please do not pray/evangelise at our patients’ bedsides, or to our visitors & staff

J Contemporary Christmas carols are preferred. Avoid songs with extensively religious undertones. You may play musical instruments, but do keep the volume down to a reasonable level.

J Greeting cards are welcome. However, the distribution of religious flyers, postcards & notices is greatly discouraged.

J If you wish to give presents to our patients, please note that we have an average of 80 – 100 patients per ward.

The following items may be presented:

· Packet dried food/biscuits

· Toiletries such as brush, toothpaste, towels etc.

· No home-cooked food

MEETING POINT

J Please arrange for all your carollers to meet at Bengawan Solo @ Block 7. Once all your members have arrived, the Team Leader should submit the names to the Counter Staff. Please do not register individually as the name list is sufficient to gain entry into the wards. The staff will also provide stickers which the carollers should paste on their attire. This is for ease of identification.

J For safekeeping, please place your bags at the Nurse Manager’s Room/Tea Room at your assigned areas. We request that no valuables be brought to the hospital as the hospital will not be responsible should any valuables be misplaced and/or lost. Also, please turn all hand phones and other electronic devices to silent mode when you are at the wards.

Hi,

Rehearsal starts at 2pm in AJ Audi this coming Saturday (30/7). We'll be meeting for lunch at AMK Hub, 11.30am before that.

A few friendly reminders:

Dress Code: Mainly black, with another colour of your choice, and bling.
We sing Bohemian Rhapsody first, followed by Ai Hen Jian Dan and MJ Medley.
From the AA: Please bring/return all remaining ticket booklets, stubs and money collected to the marketing comm (i.e. Kent) on Saturday as well.
Rest well, sleep enough, and get in the mood for the day. =)

Hi,

We'll meet in the Choir Room as usual tomorrow. However, note that we have to be punctual, (read: 10am) Ms Siau's in charge tomorrow, and we'll be waiting for their cue to go down to the Audi for mic testing/stage positioning/anything else we can do there. And the next practice will be held on 15.01.11 (As usual; 10am, AJChoir Room)

A head's up on the events in 2011:

1. (Tentative) Performance at Esplanade with AJ? (Early May)

2. Wedding Performance (June) (Wan Song's sister, if I'm not wrong)

3. The Reunion II. (Early July)

4. And, our own concert? (Late July)

The concept this time round is to think small. A size of around 8-10 would probably be our core group for the concert. Watch this space for more information.

ATTENTION!

This is neither a long emo gush nor a comprehensive bar-by-bar review about the events on the night of the 26th of April!

I think everything that could have been said has already been said amongst us after the performance and over supper. Come on, it was only 3 songs!

Come 8th May, 10am at the usual spot, I hope to have as many people as possible back in the choir room to talk about The Future. Please try to drag your friends who haven't been present as of late; friends whom you think will be interested in performing with us in the months to come! Bring along any good SONGS you might wish to share, any ideas for a THEME, a possible TITLE, and any cool new PERFORMANCE CONCEPTS you've been itching to try.

Most importantly, bring along an open heart, and your passion for making music. As long as we have these, everything will go fine =)

Hi everyone, below are some updates regarding the concert day:

1. Meeting time: Currently, the latest news is that we will get a slot to do a sound-check at (tentatively) 3.00pm.

And that means we have to reach Esplanade at around 2.15pm. At this point in time, please let me know if you're taking a half-day off (if you're working), or what time your lessons end on Monday (and subsequently the time you can reach Esplanade). If our timings can match, we can have lunch together before going.

If you're reading this, sms/fb/email me about your availability NOW. (Be a kind soul and refer the others to the blog too! ;D

2. Dressing rooms: Are provided. According to Cindy we're given 4 rooms. To be confirmed.

3. Dinner: is provided too. =)

4. Concert Attire: Purple and Black theme; must be suitable and presentable for a concert. I won't do costume checks, so please ensure that you have your attires ready for the big show by the 26th.

5. Arrangements for late-comers: I'm sorry to brand you guys as the late-comers (for the lack of a better term) but anyway, if you happen to have exams that end at 7pm, or lessons that end at 5.30pm, (so far I only know of 2 such examples among us) fret not because I will make arrangements to bring you in at the backstage entrance of the Esplanade. Just keep me informed of your estimated time of arrival.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY:

The Last Practice on 24th April.

This is the penultimate practice before our show, so please make every effort to be on time for practice (10 am). I'm expecting to see everyone unless you inform either GPT or me that you cannot make it. We're going to have a mock run of the sequence on the concert day, and I believe everyone of us will appreciate a punctual practice and a fruitful rehearsal.

2. Our performance for Mr Kwei has been postponed to 15 April 2010 (Thursday). The meeting time will be 6.30pm, outside the choir room.

What you need to do: Let either Gerald or I know by 10 April 2010 whether you can make it on that day, and what time you will be arriving there. Memorise your scores, drink some water, and don't eat too much before coming because there's supposedly pizza later on. =)

3. The colour theme for our concert attire is PURPLE & BLACK. This has been decided last practice with no violents objections. Yet.

What you need to do: Excavate/locate/summon appropriate clothings suiting the colour theme, and we shall convene on 10 Apr to discuss and see if our varying shades of purple match up. Please note that the minimum standard for our dress code shall be smart-casual. Feel free to express yourself within the confines of these boundaries. =)

We’ll also be fixing our standing positions on 10 Apr. (AJChoir will very likely be having their practice on that day too, so prepare yourselves for warm weather).

Hi everyone,

With the exception for those who are away for their study break, practice is on as usual - 10am, at the choir room.

It seems like we've landed ourselves in April already, and with the 26th looming closer in our faces, below are some points which you need to take note of:

1. Review by Mr Kwei: If my memory serves me well, the date we've decided is on 8th April - which is just next week. Jittery feelings aside, let me know if you're agreeable with meeting at 6.30pm outside the choir room for warm-ups before we sing for Mr Kwei. In case you're worried about not being ready yet, this leads me to my next point:

2. Memorise your music: Yes, it is time to drop the scores. Let's prepare ourselves to memorise the scores early, so that the music will sit nicely in your memory by the 26th.

3. Concert Attire: It's time to flaunt your creative ideas for our concert attire! We shall discuss this tomorrow in greater detail. No worries, because if we do not reach a fruitful conclusion before the concert day, we always have the perennial black-black/grey-black ensemble to fall back on.

Helloooo friends! This can be either a very late update or very early one, depending on how you look at it.

For those who didn't come for choir today, do be informed that practise will be on hold for all STUDYING personnel after the last combined session on 27th. For whoever are left (guys!), I hope we can make use of our reduced numbers to maybe work on some nitty gritty ever-present problems.

While watching the latest Varsity Voices, I became more painfully aware than ever of our extremely small singing size, and the plain enormity of the area in which we will have to fill with our sound. With a group so small, the stage just seems damn bloody big lar. And the hall is like a gigantic sound-swallowing durian... OK I'm not making much sense, but let's not deprive the circle seat people of our (presumably) awesome music ok?

A tenor sl once coined The Ancient Tenor Mantra of PRECISION and AWARENESS. Chant it 50 times each saturday morning, whether you're a tenor or not, and everything will turn out fine XD

Here's the original MV of Toto singing Africa. Just to give us a very general feel of the song, how it REALLY sounds like, and hopefully with this, we won't even need to worry about the syncopation anymore after we get confident enough to start adding fun stuff into the song! Mind-messing syncopation aside, it's actually a pretty epic song when put nicely together... Can't find a proper King's Singers version though. Send me the mp3 if you do please!

Ok lastly, please try to free up a monday or thursday evening approx 6.45pm for The Man to hear us once come April, possibly latest by 2nd week. I'll remind you guys again next week, so don't sweat it.

On another more serious note, I would like to once again gently remind everyone out there to kindly be PUNCTUAL for practise. Not even EARLY; just NOT LATE. Understand that it's already a great challenge to work with such a small group where every singer makes a significant difference in the sound, and waltzing into the choir room at 1045 or 1100 is just really, really counter-productive to anything because you're making those who made the effort to come on time wait. I know everyone's busy with their own thang, but nevertheless, I implore you to make a concious, honest-to-goodness effort for whoever sings to your left and your right. God knows I love my saturdays as much as you all do, so please make good use of the time we spend together ok?

To any and all the doubtful people out there who are questioning our status in this year's VoyAJe concert, here's our answer: We're in.

So what if we have only 9 guys and 7 girls (conductor doesn't sing remember), some of our members appear at random, and we're up against a one kind of cavernous performance hall? We're in.

We'll show the main choir that the Anderson Junior College Alumni Choir does actively and officially exist, that we're not just a party of crazy old people with nothing better to do on our saturday mornings, and that we're made of some pretty awesome musical shit!

There's no practise next week due to it being the eve of the most important Chinese holiday ever, and prac will resume the week after, on the 20th of FEBRUARY, same time, same place, 10am at the AJchoir room. BE PUNCTUAL! And anyone with friends (formerly from ajchoir duh) who wanna join, it's not too late to pull them in by the 20th! Especially if they do female voices.

Anyone with any bright ideas for our 3rd piece? Feel free to bring in your suggestions on the 20th too.

Do we know where we are going to? I guess this is a question that we – as a choir, had struggled with for more than 3 years. I believe this is an issue way bigger than any individual can answer.

I will try to answer a simpler question - Why am I in the choir?

I have been singing with the choir since 2006, when we first started practising in AMK CC. All we know is that we are a group of people that loves to sing, that enjoys each other’s company, and we have no greater aim except to ‘survive’. Survive to stay active and together despite having no external resources. We believe that we can create something special, and when the time comes for our juniors to join us, there will be a firm(er) foundation that new generations can build on, and carry on singing.

We performed on the hilltop opposite the AMK lib in exchange for a room to sing. We didn’t dare dream that it is possible to have our own concert. But we did. We did it this year.

I sing with this choir because I love the people, people who are intrinsically motivated to be here week after week, with no external rewards like CCA points or fame or glory. This is a place where it is safe to be who you are, with no judgement or prejudice. This does not mean we do not have to be responsible for our actions, but more so because we are accountable to no one except to ourselves.

As we enter the second half of 2009, I urge all our members – old and new, to join us in preparation for our carolling season. We are learning a few new songs. It will be awesome if we learn them together now so that we can quickly teach those members who can only join us during the Christmas season and we can all perform together.

For those of you who are feeling stressed over school and think that you can’t commit because of work overload, think of your Saturday morning as a time to de-stress. A time to laugh in that crazy way that choir people does which may freak out your friends in school. Furthermore, we always break around 3-4 weeks before exam, so you will always have time to prep for your exam.

Which brings to the fact that it is now about week 5/6 in school, which means we will have something like 6/7 practices before the exam break. Come join us for the next few practises and then go full gear and conquer your papers and projects. As a year 4 student with decent grades, I will say that time management and being efficient and effective would allow you to juggle more than a handful of commitments on hand – try doing that, there’s great pleasure in achieving that too.

If you’ve read thus far, I thank you for enduring my ramblings.

At the very core, we are still a bunch people who love to sing, we enjoy each other’s company, and perhaps we are entering survival mode soon.

We have created something special. Let’s hope we can sustain it and grow from strength to strength.

Hi, guess its my turn to post this time... Nothing as epic or as orgasmic as the Philippine choirs below, this is simply NJChorale, as they were last night at their concert at the YMS. Composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, I first heard Crown of Roses piece waaaay back in my first choir SYF in secondary school from TKSS choir. It was awesome (or so I thought back then). They brought this with them to Prague in 2004 and after listening to them there, we all still thought that it was plenty awesome, though their results proved otherwise. The song is essentially about Jesus as a boy and his garden of roses, where he weaves his cherished flowers into beautiful garlands. Til one fine summer day, some bratty kids come traipsing through his garden and start plucking his roses for no apparent reason other than to piss him off. So boy Jesus lets them pluck his roses, asking them to leave the naked thorns behind. Then of the thorns they made a crown, And with rough fingers pressed it down, Till on His forehead fair and young, Red drops of blood like roses sprung. I always loved how TKSS ended this song with these. Impactful it was.

Going off tangent a little, I'd like to elaborate more on whatever I saw last night and what we can learn from the video above. As you can see, they are a relatively smaller choir, but they still manage to produce a very uniform, well-blended sound despite the horribly dry acoustics of the YMS auditorium. Respect for that, because from this and of course from their acapella pieces, we can see that they are armed with a bunch of confident and vocally talented singers. Not that we lack confidence and talent, but there was room for much more improvement and much less smoking in our own performance. Though at times, the conductor sorta lost them here and there, they were otherwise very precise in their singing; their notes were generally all there. They even prepared an encore song! Though the choice of song was quite random, at least they bothered to prepare something eh. So yeah, to sum up in a word, my little takeaway point specially for us from their concert is: Preparation.

Ok, now for the other side of the coin. Personally I felt that due to the reduced numbers, the choir was trying very hard to sound loud and big. And they succeded in that, but at the expense of the emotions in their songs. Maybe this doesn't apply much to most of their acapella pieces, but in songs like Crown of Roses and Shima E, the fact that they were rushing through was quite obvious. Too fast and too furious. There could have been more breaks in between, more stretching of the notes and more playing around with the dynamics to bring out more of their slower more emotionally songs. Without these elements, a great many of their more 'chorally-inclined' songs were simply very correctly sung, thats all. Fast and furious singing was also why the concert ended so early; effectively, it was only an hour of songs in all, after taking out the filler moments and the 20 minute interval.

So below I've inserted the second video. And that's all the salient points I have to make about njchorale. Anything else should not be put here, and instead be discussed on at an official gossip session at your request.

So last week we listened to the Brits. This week we'll look at a choir a little closer to home. When i was younger i was really inspired by a Filipino choir who's conductor was a member of this group. They are quite simply one of the best choirs in the world and are two time winners of the European Grand Prix, whichi i believe to be so prestigious its not in Musica Mundi (haha). Not that what you win defines how good you are la. And of course, Circle of Life, Pasigin, Pamugun, Pok Pok Alimpako and so many others are arrangements or compositions by their members or composed for them.

So the unique thing about them is that they sing seated down, and that they don't have a conventional conductor. Instead the conductor, in this case the great Mark Carpio, sits at the left edge and conducts with body language. I will publicly admit that sometimes i listen to them and i cry shamelessly in front of my computer. Haha but i'm just gonna give you, as agreed, 1 pop arrangement, 1 classical and 1 bonus one for all the Queen fans among you. (Or lack thereof perhaps.) The first is Riverer le Stelle, We Beheld The Stars. The video is from the Grand Prix and was the winning performance. Its a bit long but its rewarding to listen to. They only have about 20+ people i think, didn't count, and this piece is written for two SATB choirs so there you are. The second is MJ's Man in the Mirror and the bonus track is Queen's Love of My Life. In case you're wondering, the soloist for the third video is Mark Carpio himself. That means yes its a guy.

Okay as promised i'm gonna upload some videos for you over the course of the season. This is not school don't worry so just enjoy them and if you feel like do leave a comment or two.

I'll start the ball rolling for a couple of weeks or so and after that hopefully we can rotate so everyone can contribute something cool and there'll be a lot of diversity there.

So this week i thought i'd introduce to you my favourite choral group and if they ever came to Singapore i'd cue overnight for tickets. The King's Singers started in the '60s and have undegone many changes in personnel without ever affecting the sound and the chosen 6 always put up a good show. Important to note the way they sing. It isn't just a great sound that's coming out of their mouths but the way their ENTIRE BODY is singing from face to feet. They sing an extremely diverse range of songs so do explore more if you like their music and i'm sure you will.

Their philosophy has always been to have songs that will please audiences and also songs that will educate audiences so i've chosen two very different pieces for you this week. The first is something you might have done before, "Short People" and the second is "Si Ch'io Vorrei Morire". Their done 26 years apart by two generations of King's Singers. And the third video is a very helpful and entertaining one about singing! Hope you enjoy them!

Concert Round Up!

Hey folks!

I decided to wait a couple of days before writing this so I can talk about Friday night in a level-headed way, uncorrupted by any lingering emotions. This is my humble analysis of the concert so I hope you spare 2 minutes of your time to read it. Yes, pause the Boys Before Flowers video now thanks.

Firstly thanks everyone for being a part of it, it truly was very wonderful working and singing with everyone again and I’m not lying when I say I enjoyed it. I’ll break it down into the good the bad and the ugly.

The Good

The biggest good, undoubtedly, is how much we’ve improved as performers. I don’t mean just music or sound but the complete package. Whatever people say about AJ students, how boring we are, how we only know how to follow the textbook, etc., you guys have proved to be complete rubbish. I really enjoyed how everyone contributed such crazy ideas on how to make the items funnier or more entertaining.
Terrence Toh says he liked some of the new ideas we had and how we were very engaging; coming from a Victorian and someone I respect a lot, that’s good we’ve got to keep at it. Who would’ve thought boring AJ might produce crazy idiots like you lot.

The sound was described by Nelson Kwei and Terrence to be very natural. In comparison with some other choirs, especially the tenor sections, this is very true. We must always stick to the philosophy of producing the sound that we are born with and not try to create a forced ‘I’ve-got-a-mosquito-in-my-voice-box’ sound. Great that we are true to our natural voices.
In particular, very proud of the sops especially the higher ones. When we first started practice I remember that I had to keep forcing you to sing on the high notes instead of cheating and ‘aah-ing’ your way through. Friday, you guys sounded great and maybe a couple of times it sounded like we were reaching for it a little too much, on the whole, very much improved. Bravo!

The concert proved that our current system of a tutorial-styled rehearsal where everyone pops in with ideas is more effective than a dictatorship by the conductor. None of us is qualified to lead a choir all by yourselves and though I have the honour of waving my hands in front, in truth I couldn’t have even thought of some of the wonderful ideas that were contributed. Just to name a few (I might miss out some, I apologize), Ryan’s decision to sing in Spanish was amazing, Bel on Blue Moon’s last chord, Cicilia for some points on Double Double, the whole Girl Chorus I’m sure many ideas were exchanged there and really too many other examples I’m sorry I can’t name.

The control in the sound was very good, very pleasing. Unlike many local choirs, there was no shouting or screaming or brashness. Mostly it was controlled, subtle and very classy. While collectively our sound maybe is not mature enough to support some of the things we wanted, nevertheless it was still cultured and very classy. There is no better way to see this than in the way we did No Importa. I know this song means a lot to a lot of us, but I feel that the school choir always screams it and the beauty of the song is neglected. We did an incredible job on it, much better than anything I’ve heard from AJChoir. I don’t mean this as disrespect, but that’s how good a job I think you guys did. No screaming, just great controlled singing.

Our solos, everyone of them, excellent. Ryan, Loh Wei, Whee Geok, Seng Hong, Joel, Zheng Kai, Jie Chao, excellent.

This a bit late, had to edit it in. But Long Teng is gifted. There aren't many good accompanists with good brains around. He's one of them.

And great job for the excellent recoveries on Pasigin and Double Double!

The Bad

Although we were entertaining by AJ standards, we still got a long way to go in terms of getting audiences to go crazy over us. Yes we were shameless, by Terrence pointed out too that if we really let ourselves go, we could be really, really entertaining. So if we want to do something do it all the way. Just youtube the King Singers or the Ten Tenors and you can see how far we still have to go. A good start, yes, but many more mountains to climb.

Sound wise we can only get better. There were a couple of places where there were dodgy notes and I get the feeling still that the sops are scared of higher notes. There is no reason to be and I’m sure we will soon overcome this. Tenors and basses: we have many wonderful singers you only need to hear our solos to know this. But sometimes as a group this individuality shows. We must sing more together and think more as a group and understand together what kind of sound we want to produce. Altos: I think we have one of the most steady alto sections island wide. But to put in some constructive comments, I want to say that you guys sound a lot better in an SSAA setting. I know a lot of you come from really solid girl choirs and you are solid. But maybe we can improve in terms of understanding our role as a middle part rather than the bass part? I don't mean this that you are bad, you are good but we must strive to be even better.

One last thing, if we are to survive as a choir, we must listen to choral music. At the moment, i think we are still not exposed enough to the wonderful world of choral music. So hopefully we can attend more concerts together or go for workshops or just discuss music casually. Start listening folks!

The Ugly

In 2005 I felt that the AJChoir I sang in was nearing excellence. Unfortunately we had to graduate. We don’t have to stop now. Stay together, I promise more daring performances, more explosive songs and more beautiful music.

We’ve worked very hard for this concert and there were many times when many people doubted if we could ever do it in time. I said trust me, trust them. Thanks for not making me look like a complete ass for my belief in you guys. We did it and we did well, but we have the potential to do so much more. Victoria Chorale might be the best in Singapore today but they have had a 17 year headstart. I know you love singing, you wouldn’t be back otherwise. Wanna find out where we’ll be in 17 years? Buckle your seatbelts cos we’re in for a ride!

Cross my fingers, but maybe, just maybe, we’re onto something special.

pls remember to bring the costumes tmr for costume check okie.. I believed that all of you have received the email from guowei. If you all have any queries with regards to this, pls approach guowei okie? Just bring whatever costume you have tmr for choir, even if you do not have the complete set of costume for 1st and 2nd half.

Choir prac's starts at 9am, choir room.. pls be punctual and our tickets sales is really good! It's almost full house already! so those who still havent pay for the tickets, pls do so okie! thanks!!

Hi all,

I've uploaded a copy of the confirmed repertoire in gmail under documents. Please go take a look at it. Hope this will give all a better idea of what's there for the performance.

Please cooperate with the EXCO & music comms to pull this off beautifully on 26 June 2009.

Bring ALL the scores for every session, if you do not have it, please retrieve it from gmail & print it. If it is not in gmail, please let us know so that we can put it up.

As mentioned this afternoon, we need to be off scores by 3 June 2009 for 9 songs, so please go back and start memorizing them. Also, be updating your attendance faithfully before every practice, if possible 1 day before the practice the latest so that Whee Geok/Chee Guan has a rough idea of how many people will be turning up.
